On the northern coastline of Crete, between Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos, is the small traditional village of Milatos. It is built on the ancient city of Milatos, and for this reason there was found in the area Minoan art objects, Mycenaean and Minoan tombs, Mycenaean pots and ruins of an ancient city. Milatos was one of the seven cities that had sent troops to Troy, according to Homer’s references to the Iliad.

To the north of the village is the settlement of Milatos beach with its picturesque harbor. It hosts fishing boats and small boats, giving the visitor a magical picture. The beach at the harbor is protected from the winds, it has fine sand and clean, calm waters and is therefore friendlier for swimming. At east, there are some other beaches in small coves, mostly pebbled and more exposed in winds, while on the last steep beach of the area you will find the picturesque chapel of Agios Nikolaos in the Pigada area.

Milatos is a developed tourist village. You will find rooms and hotels to rent for a peaceful and comfortable stay. It has beautiful taverns in the center of the village, but has also seaside fish taverns where you can eat fresh fish and Cretan traditional dishes.

An important attraction of the area is the impressive historical Milatos Cave, in where a large number of civilians were hidden in 1823 to be saved by the Turks, but unsuccessfully because of a terrible slaughter took place after a siege. Moreover, by renting a car, it is worth visiting the imposing monastery of Agios Georgios in Selinari and the Minoan Palace of Malia.

With a hired vehicle you can explore very beautiful and picturesque hamlets, which are located near Milato. So you can go to the seaside village of Sissy, the mountain villages of Vrachasi, Houmeriako, and the lowland villages Neapoli and Limnes.
